Description

This page is about a Curvy Rhombic Tuttminx. Unlike our previous Rhombic Tuttminx, the key feature of this version is: it physically stops illegal moves.

The mechanism used in this Curvy Rhombic Tuttminx is the same as that of Curvy Tuttminx V2. The ‘Curvy’ in the name is to reflect its conic cutting geometry. Such is Curvy Tuttminx to Classical Tuttminx.

Currently this product is provided in two versions.

1. DIY FDM version [Refer to ‘Building DIY FDM Puzzles‘ and Manual for Rhombic Tuttminx]

  1. Design goals: focus on a reliable delivery of final result at limited cost, suitable for weekend project.
  2. Prerequisites: access to entry level FDM printer, enough filament, able to do a simple print and finally put the puzzle together.
  3. FDM Test conditions: generic entry level FDM printer, generic slicing software, generic PLA / PETG filament, 0.2mm layer thickness, speed (100%), standard PEI board, orientation (AUTO), support (OFF), brim (OFF), no extra settings required.
  4. Delivers:
    1. [downloadable] STL files of moving parts and color tiles, pdf sticker file;
    2. [shipped] Spider set ( shells, clips, spring-nut-screw set ), connecting screws;
  5. All moving parts and (color) tiles will be printed then assembled by yourself.
  6. Buyer automatically gets permission to sell the finished copy. [So it is no wonder when you see someone selling FDM version in finished or partially finished form. Always check with seller in prior! ]
  7. Preparation time: standard 1 week.

2. MJF version

  1. Design goals: a handy collectible version taking advantages of MJF printing;
  2. Delivers: finished product;
  3. Bad news: MJF is expensive and monochromatic; Good news: we can save a lot by using mass produced cores and get all necessary PETG color tiles done by FDM printer.
  4. Preparation time: 2 weeks before shipping.
  5. There’s no reseller of this version, only available at this site. And it is significantly smaller than the FDM version.

Please refer to Different Product Versions for general version specific settings.

Out of respect as well as for reference, we will try to introduce other designs in the same or close mesh topology.

  1. Fake Tuttminx by Sam Jiang: this is best in correspondence with ‘Classical Tuttminx’ . Although it looks as easy as adding one layer from current Curvy Rhombic Tuttminx, the external layer is hard to be printed without support while remaining precise assembly with layers below. Same situation with Classical Tuttminx. These two models require extra efforts to meet our DIY FDM design preference.
  2. Flower Icosahedron by Kevin Uhrik: this model is readily transferrable into DIY FDM version and illegal rotations can be stopped.
  3. Rhombic Tuttminx (spherical, mass produced) by VeryPuzzle: going to be available in DIY FDM form with grippy tiles and rejects illegal moves.

Enjoy!
